January 6, 2009 on 5:39 am | By | In bluefreesky.com | If i start the contraceptive pill today, when will i be protected?i asked the dr how long till im safe,, he said 4 days
when i went chemist to buy it the pharmacist said it will take effect in one month
i told her the dr said 4 days was enough and she laughed,,,
whos right? thankyou xxxxxxx,, by the way the pill is called Levlen 30
If you started taking the pill yesterday, your odds of getting pregnant if you have sex today are minutely smaller than if you had not taken the pill. Its not linear - I imagine the bulk of protection does come in the first 4 days, but that might make the odds something like 10%. Would you consider 10% sufficient? To achieve that 1% you need to be taking it for the rest of the month.
Want a really tortured analogy?
Imagine a well: If you drop a ball down the well and it hits the bottom, you get pregnant. Every day, you drop a block which covers up more of the bottom, but the blocks don't fall down and line up in rows, they land on each other, overlapping, etc. Even if the well is pretty narrow and the blocks take up most of the width of the well, there is a CHANCE the ball will manage to bounce around and eventually hit the bottom.
By the way, every day that goes by that you don't take a pill, someone comes and REMOVES a block. Obviously if the well is mostly plugged up and you remove one block, it won't be THAT much easier for the ball to get the bottom, but it will be a little easier. And if you keep removing blocks, eventually, they offer no protection at all.
Well, I told you it was a tortured analogy.
Generally, though, if you start taking the pill on the first day of your period, the 7-day rule applies - ie you need to use an alternative form of contraeception for 7 days.
