lost music

  • I recently transfered all my itunes music to an external harddrive. Somehow in the process it appears that much of it was lost. When in itunes if I select a song to play (the track names still appear in the library) often a small exclamation mark will appear next to the track and a message pops up stating that the track could not be played because the file could not be found. Where are my songs? Can they be retrieved? If not how do I remove all the empty songs from appearing annoyingly in the library?

  • Hi, My understanding is you transfered the files from one location to another but have not updated your iTunes library? If so what you need to do is as follows: Clear your iTunes Library -Select Library in iTunes -Select all tracks -Hit delete (you will be asked if you want to keep the files, make sure you click "Keep Files") Either -Select your external hard drive as your default iTunes location --Go to preferences/options --then the Advanced tab --under general you should be able to click 'Change' next to 'iTunes Music Folder Location' --browse to the folder you have moved your music to OR -Browse to the folder you have saved your music in -drag it and drop it into your itunes library (in Windows you drag the folder into the iTunes bar at the bottom, in OS X you use expos e [F9]) If I've presumed wrong and you've infact lost the files there is little you can do except check the trash/recycle bin. If you have alot of music which is still on your native drive simply drag and drop this into iTunes like you did with the files you moved. Hopefully that's addressed your issue, if there's anything else you need to ask please don't hesitate. Alistair
