How do I tell a girl that she needs to take a shower?

  • I don't want to make her feel bad, but she smells like sweat and pee. I don't even have to be standing next to her to get a whiff. How do I tell her without offending her?

    Who the hell deleted my question? I'm serious!


  • Just mention the smell a few times when she is around you... Don't be like "OH MY GAH WHO SMELLS?!?!?!?" Just say "Hey do you guys smell something?? Like pee kind of." Eventually she will realize that the smell is herself. Hopefully it isn't something like that her parents are abusive and/or neglectful and don't allow her to shower... that does happen. Or if she is in a class with you or something then you could put together a basket of things like scented body wash, a loo-fa, scented soaps, body sprays, body scrubs, bath beads, etc. and put it in her locker or get office personnel to deliver it to her. Maybe include a note that mentions, that you were just thinking of her... without signing your name of course. Then you could just hope that she would use the products...

  • That would probably be better coming from her guidance counselor. Find who that would be and talk to THEM.


  • It's not your job to tell her anything. Sorry it's unpleasant, but most people are unpleasant in one respect or another. It's not your responsibility to fix her.


  • We had a girl like that in high school and we left a bag of soap deodorant and perfume on her desk...anonymously.


  • Just tell her. She might be embarrassed but you are doing good for her. She might not even realize that she smells.

    Tell her in private though. If you tell her with people around, she will think you are making fun of her.


  • I had a problem like this last year. One of the boys in my program smelled absolutely awful... I can't even describe the smell, but it was sickening. My friend was his suitemate and confirmed that the guy never showered. We tried to drop hints, but eventually we all just started ignoring him in hopes that he'd realize something was up. If he tried to sit near me in class, I moved away (I have asthma and am very sensitive to smell, so I truly could not sit near him.) I told my friends we should buy a shower scrub and some body wash and stick it near his door, but we never ended up doing it. If you're a friend of hers and don't want to ignore her or do anything super obvious, just bring into conversation the fact that something nearby smells bad... many girls tend to immediately fear it's them, even if they have great hygiene, and hopefully she will figure out that it is indeed her and change her ways.   • Assuming you are in school, is there a female teacher, like a PE or health teacher you could approach about this? A teacher may be better able to speak privately to her. In the event that there are problems in her family, a teacher would also be in a position to put her in touch with agencies set up to help. Sounds like you have a good heart. Please try to support her in whatever way you can.


  • There are not many polite ways to tell a person they stink. Do it in a nice way when alone. Let her know that others have been complaining. Usually, public humiliation works best.

  • well there's a chance she may be offended anyway no matter how soft coating you tell her. she will feel embarrassed. but somebody has to tell her before somebody else tells her in a very rude way.

    i was in the 7th grade and we were in gym class. this girl i knew since....maybe elementary school past me and made a big scene saying that i stink. so instead of her just pulling me aside in private, she made it every body's business and i was humiliated and embarrassed. people stink, its part of human life, and sometimes we may not be aware of it until someone else steps up and lets you know.

    so tell her for her sake so she wont be humilated like i was.

  • That happened to me too. She smelt like dead dogs and poop.
    I never said anything and died in agony when I sat next to her in class.
